Pretty much every district of Hong Kong offers something to visitors, from the sights and sounds of Victoria Bay to the hustle and bustle of Soho. There is always something going on within easy reach of your Hong Kong hotel. Travellers making for Hong Kong regularly cite Chinese New Year as being one of the main reasons for visiting, and the festival is a truly spectacular experience. The Chinese New Year festival takes the form of three days of celebrating and Hong Kong is illuminated by a huge firework show hosted in Victoria Harbour.

Second only in size to Chinese New Year is the Mid-Autumn Festival, a celebration of Chinese history and the major event of the overthrow of their Mongolian rulers. More fireworks about and dragon dances are sure to please, plus there are huge amounts of great food to indulge in. Be aware though that Hong Kong hotels are in greater demand around this festival so be sure to book ahead.

Hong Kong boasts some famous sporting events and festivals as well, and each year in late March the island welcomes visitors from around the world to the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament. The competition is arguably Hong Kong’s biggest sports festival and is a great way to experience sport in an unusual environment.

Staying in a Hong Kong hotel is the perfect way to relax and unwind following a long-haul flight, and some of the accommodation in the downtown Kowloon district is as fine as anywhere in the world. Another of the island’s popular celebrations is the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which lasts for a whole month from late February until the end of March each year. This event attracts famous performers from across the world of entertainment, and incorporates all styles of music, from orchestral to Cantonese opera, blues to jazz.

March in Hong Kong also means Hung Shing Water Festival at Mui Wo Beach where tourists can mingle with local fisherman and villagers as they launch candle lanterns onto the water and light paper lanterns which are released into the starry sky at night. Mui Wo Beach also offers travellers the chance to take part in many different local village cultural practices.

Springtime in Hong Kong sees a couple of festivals which are as popular with the locals as they are with visiting tourists. In April tourists and natives alike gather at cemeteries for the Ching Ming festival, a family-oriented event where people visit their ancestors’ graves and leave gifts and offerings for them. Typical things to leave include food and drink and most people leave some incense burning at the graveside in tribute.

On the back of the Ching Ming event is the Tin Hau Festival, a piece of Hong Kong folklore turned into a public celebration. Tin Hau is the saint said to protect fisherman and as such the harbours around Hong Kong hotels are filled with hundreds of colourful dows and boats which transport festival-goers around the various Tin Hau temples of the island to wish for good luck.

One of the responsibilities of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority is to ensure that the currency of H. Kong is stable against the other world currencies. It is currently pegged to the US dollar.

There are three categories of banks in H. Kong namely the License Banks, Deposit Taking Companies and Restricted License Banks. However, what you have to know about the Hong Kong banking industry is that the license banks are the only ones that are allowed to operate current or saving accounts. Retail banks are task at providing selections of different accounts tiers and services. The savings accounts can be in H. Kong dollars, US dollars or renminbi. Most of the banks in H. Kong allow their customers to link debit card, credit card, cheque, and savings to a master account. What the customers do in most cases is to exchange the minimum deposit to the savings accounts in order to avoid bank serves charges.

When you want to open an account in Hong Kong, there are some retail banks that offer their customers opening forms which you can get easily by downloading from their websites. Different banks have different requirements and criteria when opening a bank account. However, to open a saving or current account in H. One thing that you have to know is that it is not necessary that you are a resident of H. Kong to open a bank account.

Central, on Hong Kong Island, is where colonial Hong Kong started its life from, back in the 1840s, and where some of the city’s most glitzy skyscrapers and swish shopping malls currently stand. As a matter of fact, the area sometimes looks like a showcase of the world’s leading architects…

Naturally, unless you are staying at one of the hotels nearby, you will start your visit to “Central” from either MTR-Central or the Star Ferry Pier.

    * Two IFC Tower – Just between the ferry pier and the Airport Express Station, is currently the city’s tallest skyscraper, although it is soon going to lose its supremacy to the upcoming International Commerce Centre in Kowloon. Soaring to a height of 415 m, this contemporary obelisk-shaped megatower is possibly Hong Kong skyline’s most striking feature. It was architected by Cesar Pelli, the famous Argentinian born architect who is behind the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, and attracted some controversy at the time, as it breached the Metro-plan guidelines not allowing new buildings to cut Mount Victoria’s ridge-line, when seen from different key points along the harbour, including Tsim Sha Tsui’s waterfront esplanade.
* Rising to 346 m, The Center is Hong Kong’s fourth tallest skyscraper, and one of the only highrises in the city that is entirely steel-structured, with no reinforced concrete core. Other than its unique polygonal circumference, “The Centre” is particularly distinguished for its neon-lights-arrangement, comprising almost 10,000 neon tubes in different colors, which turns the building into one of the most prominent features of the “Symphony of lights” show. There is a skylobby on the 42nd floor, which serves as an observation deck.
* HSBC Hong Kong headquarters building (or simply HSBC Building) stands across the road from Statue Square and features a classic example of Hong Kong’s modern architecture, combining contemporary design with traditional Feng Shui philosophy… Designed by famous British architect, Norman Foster, this 180 metres tall building has a module design, consisting of five steel modules with no internal support structure. It was the most expensive building in the world by the time it was completed, in 1985, worth roughly HK$ 5.2 billion. Tip: Take the escalator to the 1st floor and see the building’s colossal atrium…
* Bank of China (BOC) Tower, just a stone’s throw from HSBC Building, is one of the metropolis’ most familiar towers and can be seen from almost every point around Victoria Harbour and the city. Rising to a height of 315 meters, this architecturally mesmerizing skyscraper was the tallest building in Hong Kong and Asia until 1992, as well as the first building outside the USA to break the 1,000 ft. mark. Designed by the famous sino-american architect I.M.Pei, Bank of China Tower is supported by five steel columns at its corners, and triangular frameworks that zigzag between these columns and transfer the weight of the structure, creating many unique angles that make the tower looks different, when seen from different positions… When its construction was completed, back in the late 1980s, the tower’s sword-like shape was pointing directly at HSBS Main Building and the management of Bank of China was criticized for “cutting” HSBC’s good Feng Shui… Fortunately enough, the Cheung Kong Center was erected in between the two towers and the “Feng Shui conflict” was brought to an end… There is a small observation point on the 43rd floor, that is open to the public, but visits to the main observation deck on the 70th floor are by appointment only.
* The Hong Kong Planning and Infrastructure Exhibition Gallery, in Murray Road Multi-storey Car Park Building, opposite Bank of china Tower, showcases the planning and infrastructure projects of the Government of Hong Kong, using interactive displays, touch screens and other hi-tech devices and fun methods… One of the gallery’s main highlights is the “Infrastructure Walk”: An 18.5 meters long 3D-model of Hong Kong with video screens, highlighting different development projects across the territory.

Free and Open Economy

In the 2009 Index of Economic Freedom, Hong Kong has once again been placed first, the fifteenth consecutive year it has held this position. The index is an annual survey conducted by The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal that compares 183 countries in relation to 10 ‘freedom’ variables including business freedom, investment freedom, property rights, freedom from corruption and more. Economic freedom is still largely regarded as an important key to growth and prosperity. As free trade is the life-blood of Hong Kong, Hong Kong embraces globalisation of trade and services. There are no barriers to trade – such as tariffs and quotas – being put in place, and there is no foreign exchange controls or restrictions on both inward and outward investments. Additionally, the Hong Kong Government also does not place any nationality restrictions on corporate or sectoral ownership. This makes company formation in Hong Kong an attractive and relatively fuss-free option.

Gateway to Mainland China

Situated at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), Hong Kong is strategically located for trade with Mainland China. China’s rapid economic development of increasingly competitive industries has created more opportunities for even greater economic expansion. With the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) that took effect in 2004, Hong Kong can now benefit from additional and exclusive Mainland market access. Company incorporation in Hong Kong would mean that the vast market of Mainland China is readily accessible. Mainland China is now Hong Kong’s largest trading partner and they are both key to one another’s economic success. Hong Kong is the largest source of overseas direct investment in Mainland China.

Low Taxes

At 16.5%, Hong Kong’s corporate tax rate is among the lowest in the world. Hong Kong adopts a territorial basis principle of taxation, where only profits which have been sourced in Hong Kong are taxable. The effective tax rate is even lower after taking into consideration tax exemptions and deductions such as Industrial Buildings Allowances on Industrial Buildings and Structure, Commercial Buildings Allowances on Commercial Buildings and Structures, Plant and Machinery Allowances, approved Donations and other allowable Deductible Expenses in accordance to Hong Kong’s Inland Revenue Ordinance.

In addition, there is no capital gains tax in Hong Kong and no with holding tax on dividends and interest or collection of social security benefits. There is no Value-Added Tax (VAT) in Hong Kong. The limited tax base, coupled with very low tax rates, makes Hong Kong’s tax incidence one of the lowest, if not the lowest, among developed economies, and therefore, Hong Kong company formation makes for a very tax efficient business entity. In short, with its free and open economy, low taxes, and strategic position as a gateway to Mainland China, Hong Kong is abundant with vast opportunities for investment and growth. Investing in Hong Kong to get the best conditions for your business abroad.

Hong Kong is among the world’ most busiest and fast-paced cities. Further, buying a real estate in Hong Kong is considered one of the best options for long term investment, as it can undoubtedly fetch you huge profits.

Hong Kong’s property buying processes are administered by the Conveyancing and Ordinance, which is modeled in the form of English Law. In other words, the real estate law of this Special Administrative Region is quite similar to the one found in the UK, which in turn has attracted many American and British real estate investors.

One of the unique things regarding the Hong Kong Property Law is that all of the land found here belongs to government, ie, each of the real estate in Hong Kong is held under leasehold title. Hence, those who are interested in property investment buy an agreement or a lease for a period ranging from 50 to 999 years.

A real estate or property in Hong Kong can be either solely owned by one person or through jointly by several investors. However, joint investment may be usually in the form of tenant or a joint tenancy. Further, a property can also be owned through a company structure. But, in case, if a company would like to conduct its business through the purchase of a property on lease, then it should be registered with the Hong Kong Companies Registry. In addition, every type of lease should be listed at the Hong Kong’ Land Registry.

Nowadays, a large number of real estate firms and realtors are now there in order to help you find and buy your dream property in Hong Kong, no matter it is single detached home, villa, apartment, office, or industrial space. Many of them render the services of professional lawyers to help you in effectively carrying out buying procedures, such as agreement process, listing on the Hong Kong Land Registry or Hong Kong Companies Registry, tax matters, and negotiation of purchase.

It is important to undertake a serious investigation into reputation and the quality of real estate providers because there are some real estate firms may charge huge fee. Sources such as yellow pages, magazines, and newspapers, the internet also serves as an excellent source to find the most competent service provider in Hong Kong.
